The founders of LHZ analytics are currently employed as scientists at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon. Both founders have been working on the development, validation and application of new analytical methods for the detection of microplastics in the environment and biological samples. Validation and optimisation have always been of the utmost interest.
After studying chemistry and business studies, Lars obtained his PhD degree in analytical chemistry from the Universität Hamburg in 2021. Lars is involved in various research projects in the field of micro- and nanoplastics, and the analysis of plastic additives.
Since completing his PhD in analytical chemistry at the Universität Hamburg in 2019, Tristan has been working on the development and application of new protocols focussing on elemental and isotope analysis, as well as the analysis of microplastics.
The core competencies of LHZ analytics contribute to a sustainable solution of the so-called "plastic crisis", as they lie in the analysis of microplastics and synthetic fibers in the environment. The prerequisite for solving a problem is understanding it.
Microplastics are mainly created by the fragmentation of larger plastic waste items due to photodegradation and mechanical stress. These anthropogenic particles are released into the environment in large quantities and have become omnipresent.
The services provided by LHZ analytics are in line with the latest scientific findings. In addition, microplastic pollution is becoming increasingly relevant for authorities and legislation.
This is demonstrated by standardization efforts such as DIN EN ISO 24187:2024-04 Principles for the analysis of microplastics present in the environment (ISO 24187:2023); German version EN ISO 24187:2023, ASTM D8332-20 Standard Practice for Collection of Water Samples with High, Medium, or Low Suspended Solids for Identification and Quantification of Microplastic Particles and Fibers, ASTM D8333-20 Standard Practice for Preparation of Water Samples with High, Medium, or Low Suspended Solids for Identification and Quantification of
Microplastic Particles and Fibers Using Raman
Spectroscopy, IR Spectroscopy, or Pyrolysis-GC/MS and the Standard Operating Procedures for Extraction and Measurement by Raman Spectroscopy of Microplastic Particles in Drinking Water published by the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project Authority.
